TOUR OVERVIEW
Lviv to Kharkiv differs from our Ukraine war tours to the Kyiv area and Odesa as risk of injury to human life is higher, Kharkiv being much closer to the combat zone. Glide bombs, combat drones and missiles of every conceivable type are launched towards the city centre and residential districts every day.
Kharkiv has learned to survive incessant bombardments. The russian FAB-500 glide bomb (260 kg explosive weight) in particular has caused absolute destruction, guided by satnav on to apartment buildings and other non-military targets. Before that there was the FAB-250, and now, even more destructive variants have arrived, the FAB-1500 and FAB-3000. putin wants to clear Kharkiv of people by any means, much as he did in the smaller city of Mariupol (30,000 dead).
While nowhere in Ukraine is safe until war ends, including Lviv, for travellers who want to visit a city close to the front line with all the attendant risks provided by russia, without a guarantee of not getting hurt, Kharkiv is definitely the last stop. As russian territory is less than 20 miles away, air alarms often sound after explosions. We must remind you that this war tour in east Ukraine is not for everyone.
Sadly, many historic buildings and landmarks have been damaged or destroyed, such as the constructivist Derzhprom built in the 1920s.
