TOUR OVERVIEW
Is it true that there are more coffee shops than pubs in Lviv? The answer is a resounding yes, and that's odd when one remembers that Lviv is the beer capital of Europe, if not the world.
The story of Lviv coffee has a somewhat stolen, or more rather manufactured history (read on...). Perhaps there's a reason why the deepest coffee cave in Lviv is called "Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture".
Where did it all begin? The story isn't simple, quite the reverse, in fact. No one really knows the truth, but does it really matter? We've heard a lot of tall tales, so here's our interpretation of what is known, unknown, and everything in between!
A Ukrainian Cossack, Yuri Kulczycki, found himself living in Vienna after a period of time spent in Turkey, some of it in captivity, where he became hooked on Turkish coffee houses.
The Viennese didn't trust Yuri due to his connections in Turkey, and they weren't keen on drinking the drink of the enemy either. However, Yuri, a native of Lviv region, earned their trust.
His coffee story is really all about Vienna and fighting Ottoman armies, but in an inevitably roundabout way, via a yarn about 300 bags of coffee and lashings of jiggery pokery, it has became enshrined in the murky history of Lviv.
We drink on both sides of our underground river Poltva without prejudice. Lviv old town is not where everything is, we have plenty of very explorable streets everywhere and on many of those, one can find at least an esoteric, perhaps even exotic coffee shop.
Coffee with roast eggs? Coffee on fire? You see, coffee in Lviv is quite the quagmire of olfactory overload. Ultimately, the joy of coffee tasting in Lviv is a celebration of all the senses.
Lviv Coffee Crawl reveals addictive Lviv and is led by a local. We get to the bottom of the coffee story in Lviv!
