TOUR OF LVIV

Exploring Lviv old town is not unlike stepping into a fairy tale, where the most complicated history, cultural confusion, and architectural magnificence converge to create an unforgettable visual, metaphysical, spiritual experience.

I often think of RPGs from the 1990s such as Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate when trying to describe Lviv to newcomers who were gaming back then, in the sense that pantomimesque characters colour our cobbled streets, and many of our traditional establishments effuse rather esoteric atmospheres.

You'll find yourself surrounded by the essence of a city steeped in centuries of rich heritage, a genuine fusion of Eastern European values beginning with Polish, then Austrian, then Ukrainian.

Often incorrectly referred to as being Ukraine's cultural heartbeat (Lviv is more Polish than Ukrainian), Lwów (Львів) radiates a creative energy quite unlike anything you've felt before, making every moment spent on our oldest streets come alive with surprises.

Lviv is a treasure chest of architectural miracles, and UNESCO's "Lviv - Ensemble of the Historic Centre" serves as an enchanting gateway to the realization of great expectations. Strolling across our main square is real time travel, the area abounds with vibrant facades from a bygone age.

Iconic landmarks such as the aforementioned Rynok Square are brimful of beautiful local life, while our chapels, churches and monasteries remind us all of old Christian communites that continue to thrive today.

Behold a medley of architectural styles spanning Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, making Lviv look familiar if you have travelled through Germany and Italy. Every building groans under the sheer weight of past times, urging you to linger more and learn about every chapter of every story ever penned about Lviv.

Lviv's café culture is perhaps already legendary, undeniably integral to it's allure. Known as Ukraine's coffee capital, curious visitors are beckoned to venture underground where our iconic coffee caves lie in wait.

But Lviv's culinary creativity is not limited to coffee, there are dozens of food and drink establishments in our old town, from Mediaeval to Galician, Georgian to Soviet. Indeed, a food tour in Lviv with tastings aplenty is must-do, hence adventurous gastronomic activities offered by local tour operator In Lviv Tours are always on the menu.

A private tour of Lviv with In Lviv Tours does not typically include museums or galleries. They can be included on request or we usually advise clients about what we think they'd be interested in after a few hours spent in their company.

Our museums are rather compact, quite unlike those in Europe. At time of writing, their focus is protecting our heritage from infrequent but real russian air strikes.

Galleries in Lviv showcase Polish and Austro-Hungarian art, furniture and sculpture. There's much we can learn from these exhibits. Given that all our museums and galleries (Potocki Palace apart) are 30 minute visits at most, they are easy enough to fit in.

The significance of Lviv is not just rooted in aesthetics, it embodies a profound resilience, and that is ongoing due to russian terrorism. Throughout wars and shifting political tides, Lviv has maintained it's unique identity, standing as a cultural crossroads and cornerstone of Europe as well as Ukraine. This fact has not gone down well with the Kremlin, but then nothing really does.

In desperation, or more rather retaliation, the russian federation decided to target residential streets, and on a handful of tragic occasions, succeeded, if one can call success killing children in their own homes. Since then, air defence in Lviv has been ramped up. Whatever russia sends to Lviv gets blown out of the sky.

Discovering Lviv is a pleasure for our clients and a new story of pride for our guides - never just a tour, always a journey. An opportunity to make new friends who more often than not return to Lviv having acquired a taste for how we live.

In Lviv, history breathes life into modernity, offering visitors the chance to grasp how the past shapes the present, while basking in the warmth of local life.

 A visit to Lviv isn't ticking off a destination, it's self-discovery. A new-found inspiration that lasts a lifetime.

Whether you're captivated by the harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary vibrancy that sets everyday Lviv life apart from any other city, or charmed by the Spirit of Lviv, one thing is certain: a tour of Lviv will make it's mark on your soul.

There is a famous tradition in Rome. Throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain (with a few positional caveats) will ensure a return to the Eternal City. The moment you set foot in Lviv is the guarantee of a return to Lviv.
